As part of Ciao Philadelphia’s Festival, the historic Church of the Advocate in Philadelphia, the Peace Day Philadelphia Festival, in collaboration with the Assisi Suono Sacro Festival, proudly presents the International Opera Theater’s Philadelphia premiere of Hildegard Von Bingen Bambina Mistica e La Vergine Nera: Una Preghiera per la Pace (Hildegard Von Bingen Child Mystic & The Black Madonna: A Prayer for Peace). Our new cantata, had its world premiere as part of The Assisi Suono Sacro Festival on August 7, 2016. In Italian and Latin, with 12th century chat of Hildegard Von Bingen and original music by living Sardinian sacred music composer, Mariano Garau, based on a libretto by Karen Lauria Saillant, inspired by Hildegard's writings and translated into Italian by Maria Luisa Meo, we celebrate the messages of Hildegard Von Bingen and The Black Madonna: compassion and love for our earth and our world family. Nine young Philadelphia area sopranos portray nine of The Virtues renamed by Hildegard. Thirteen year old soprano, Sofia Kalinda, portrays the great 12th century mystic, who had visions from her earliest days, as a child. Hildegard would grow up to be a polymath, composer, artist, dramatist, naturalist, and outspoken advisor to kings, bishops and Popes, who, eight hundred years after her death, would be named a saint and doctor of the church. Fully staged and costumed, our cantata features the beautiful voice of Jamaican soprano, Carline Waugh, as The Madonna.
